This joint lock targets the shoulder and shoulder blade, commonly known as the scapula. Scapula is Portuguese and is one of the most effective methods in Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu. Omoplata is thought to have originated in catch wrestling or judo and has become a widespread technique in BJJ, often used by the guard. This article will provide an overview of omoplata, its history, and the step-by-step process of performing it. It will also demonstrate how to execute the technique from different positions, such as the guard, side control, or triangle. This will show you how to execute the jiu-jitsu submissions and effectively gain a valuable technique. How To Perform The Omoplata When doing an omoplata, the practitioner must begin by standing and facing their opponent. Next, the practitioner should step their left foot behind and to the outside of the opponent's right leg and then reach across their body with their right arm, grabbing the opponent's left arm. The practitioner should then use their left arm to hold their right elbow and then drop their hips to the ground, pushing their opponent's arm away from their body. Finally, the practitioner should use their legs to trap the opponent's arm and shoulder and then roll onto their back, forcing the opponent to the ground. If done correctly, the practitioner will have completed the omoplata. Where Does The Name Come From The omoplata submission hold comes from the Portuguese word "omoplata," which translates to "shoulder blade." This name is derived from the fact that the hold is applied by placing the shoulder blade of the opponent against the practitioner's arm. The omoplata is a versatile submission hold that can be used from both the top and bottom positions, making it a valuable technique for various situations. A Brief History The omoplata technique has a long history in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). The method was first developed by Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese judoka who traveled to Brazil in 1914 and eventually taught Carlos Gracie, the founder of BJJ. The Gracie family then passed down and refined the technique, eventually becoming a BJJ staple. Over the years, the omoplata has been used in various competitions, such as the IBJJF, and has become a popular technique for both gi and no-gi practitioners. The omoplata is a versatile submission that can be used from various positions and is a great way to submit an opponent without relying on strength or size. How To Do The Omoplata From The Closed Guard To do the omoplata from the closed guard position, the first step is to have the opponent in the closed guard. The person in the closed guard should then move their right leg over the opponent's left arm, trapping it between their legs. Next, the person in the closed guard should reach their left arm around the opponent's neck and then get their right arm around the opponent's left arm. After this, the person in the closed guard should use their left leg to press against the opponent's right hip, while their right leg should push against the opponent's left shoulder. Finally, the person in the closed guard should use their left arm to pull the opponent's head down, while their right arm should be used to push the opponent's left arm up, thus completing the omoplata. How To Do The Omoplata From The Side Position The omoplata is a submission move from the side control position in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. To perform the omoplata, the practitioner must first establish side control. This is done by using the practitioner's body weight to pin the opponent to the ground while keeping the practitioner's hips elevated. Once the practitioner has side control, they should reach their arm across the opponent's body while keeping their elbow close to their torso. The practitioner should then place their other hand on the ground and use it to push off and rotate their body away from the opponent. This should bring the practitioner's arm across the opponent's shoulder and neck while the practitioner's legs should be extended behind the opponent's back. The practitioner should then use their legs to press the opponent's arm down and away from their body while simultaneously pushing the opponent's shoulder and neck down with their arm. This will create a lock, and the practitioner can apply pressure to the opponent's shoulder to force a submission. How To Do The Omoplata From The Triangle To perform an omoplata from the triangle position, the first step is for the practitioner to sit up, bringing their chest up and their hips forward. Next, they should reach their left arm across the opponent's back and then reach their right arm around their head, creating a triangle shape with their arms. Their left arm should then push against the back while their right arm should pull the head toward their chest. From here, they can rotate their hips, using their legs to trap the opponent's arm. Finally, they can use their legs to push the opponent's arm away from their body while pushing their hips forward to complete the omoplata. Defending The Omoplata When it comes to defending against the omoplata, the key is foiling the opponent’s attempt in the beginning stages of the move. If your opponent moves his leg over your shoulder, you need to act quickly to ensure that your posture remains solid and he cannot complete the submission. Move your arm from underneath his leg, freeing it from being locked around your neck, then try and turn away from him. This will break his leverage, reducing his ability for control and preventing him from pulling down on you with his body weight. If, however, your opponent has managed to move all the way around into an omoplata position and has secured a hold of some kind on you (e.g.: underhook if they are going for an inverted reverse triangle type omoplata), then there are additional steps that you can take. You will want to focus on using bodyweight as well as levers here by 'unrolling' yourself unraveling out of their grip as much as possible while slightly pushing them forward with your hips in order to keep them off balance... It might feel uncomfortable at times, but if done correctly, this should help create enough space for you to escape before any further damage is done. However, those interested in competing should definitely implement a strength conditioning program, including pull day exercises, especially at higher levels. More muscle and speed could be the difference between victory and defeat on the mat. What is a "Pull Day?" One of the best ways to consistently build muscle and improve strength is to use the Push, Pull, Legs Routine, otherwise known as PPL. This is a common 3-day or 6-day workout split that helps exercise all the muscle groups in the body by focusing on a different area each day. "Legs," of course, refers to any exercise that benefits the lower half of the body. This methodology divides the upper body into "pulling" muscles—usually the back and biceps- and "pushing" muscles—the chest, shoulders, and triceps. A 3-day rotation would look like Push Day/Pull Day/Legs/Rest, whereas a 6-day cycle would be Push Day/Pull Day/Legs/Push Day/Pull Day/Legs/Rest. 10 Pull Day Exercises To Add To Your Regimen When incorporating PPL strength conditioning into BJJ training, it is important to know which exercises to do on which day of the split. These 10 exercises are excellent for options to add to your pull day. These workouts work to strengthen the pull muscles and improve BJJ performance. Single-Arm Kettlebell Rows The single-arm kettlebell row is a great pull day exercise to get started. Bracing on one arm while lifting the kettlebell with the other provides better stability and allows the lifter to isolate the back muscles. To perform a single-arm kettlebell row: Find a flat bench. Place one leg on the bench at a 90-degree angle and the other on the floor. Place the same-side hand on the bench directly under the shoulder. Place the kettlebell beside the bench and lift it straight up with the available hand. Pull the elbow straight past the back without turning the hips or shoulders, pause, and straighten the arm to lower the kettlebell back to the floor. Perform 3 or 4 sets of 10-15 repetitions on each side. Bent Over Barbell Rows Bent-over barbell rows are like single-arm kettlebell rows but with more emphasis on stability and posture. Stand in front of a weighted barbell.  Place the feet shoulder-width apart under the bar.  Using an overhand grip, place the hands on the bar slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Bend the knees and push the hips back to get the back parallel to the floor.  Like single-arm rows, focus on pulling the elbows past the back and tightening the core to prevent the back from arching.  At the top of the movement, pause for a moment, then lower the bar back below the knees. Perform 3 or 4 sets of 10-15 repetitions. Rest for a minute or two between each set. Pull-Ups Pull-ups are a pull day workout that require very little equipment. Any horizontal bar that can hold body weight will do. Stand underneath the bar with hands wider than shoulder-width apart and grab the bar with an overhand grip.  Contract the biceps and back muscles to pull the body upward and bring the chin to the bar.  Pause for a moment, then lower the body back down. Perform 3 or 4 sets of 10-15 repetitions. Inverted Rows Instead of pulling the bar toward the body, this alternative to traditional rows focuses on drawing the body toward the bar. This requires a squat rack or smith machine with a bar at waist height.  Starting with your body underneath the bar, grip the bar with an overhand grip, placing hands just wider than shoulder-width apart.  Hang down from the bar so that only the heels make contact with the ground.  Straighten the back by activating the core and glutes. Next, pull the chest toward the bar, pause, and then lower back into the starting position while keeping the back straight. Perform 3 or 4 sets of 10-15 repetitions. Bicep Curls Bicep curls are one of the most straightforward pull day exercises. Begin with a dumbbell in each hand Stand with palms facing forward and elbows against the side of the body.  Lift the dumbbells to the chest one at a time or together.  Pause at the top of the movement before lowering the dumbbells. Perform 3 or 4 sets of 10-15 repetitions on each side. Hammer Curls Hammer curls are a variation of bicep curls.  Start with the dumbbells in each hand and the palms facing toward the body.  ]Keep the elbow against the side of the body while lifting the dumbbells toward the shoulders. Do this one at a time or together.  Pause at the top of the movement before lowering the dumbbells back down to the starting position. Perform 3 or 4 sets of 10-15 repetitions on each side. Lat Pulldowns Lat pulldowns can be a great alternative to pull-ups for those who struggle with them. However, they do require a specialized lat pulldown machine.  Adjust the machine's seat so the feet can be flat on the ground, and then sit down and grab the bar with a wide overhand grip.  Ensure that the back is straight and the chest is slightly forward.  Start with the arms fully extended, then slowly pull the bar down until it reaches the top of the chest.  Pause for a moment before extending the arms back to the starting position. Perform 3 or 4 sets of 10-15 repetitions. Seated Cable Rows A seated cable row is another pull day exercise that requires a specialized machine. Look for one with a close grip bar. Sit with the knees slightly bent, the torso perpendicular to the bench, and the feet positioned on the platform.  Grab the bar with palms facing each other and pull it toward the body.  Start with the arms slightly bent, arch the back, and squeeze the shoulder blades together to pull the bar towards the abs.  Pause for a second before releasing the bar back to the starting position. Perform 3 to 4 sets of 10-15 repetitions. Deadlift  Though deadlifts are most associated with bodybuilders, they can also help strengthen the back, core, and biceps for BJJ. Stand in front of a weighted barbell with feet shoulder-width apart under the bar.  Bend over the bar and grab it with an overhead grip, making sure the hands are wider than the legs.  Bend the legs and push the hips back until the back is parallel to the floor.   Push the hips forward and bring the barbell to the hips, standing up straight. Be careful not to arch the back. Pause at the top of the movement before lowering the bar to the starting position. Do 5 sets of 5 repetitions. Dumbbell Pullover Dumbbell pullovers are one of the only pull day exercises that target the chest muscles. Start by sitting on a flat bench with the back straight, feet on the ground, and a dumbbell in each hand.  Next, lay back on the bench with each dumbbell straight over the chest, then lift the dumbbells above the head with straight arms.  Pause at the top of the movement before bringing the dumbbells back overhead to the chest. Learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu moves is a valuable skill to develop for self-defense and the satisfaction of mastering physical movements. Jiu-jitsu is a particularly handy skill for women to learn, as jiu jitsu moves can help a woman defend herself against a heavier, larger attacker. Effective BJJ technique does not require speed, strength, or explosiveness compared to other martial arts based on punches and kicks. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu moves allow you to overcome a larger, stronger opponent via the use of superior leverage, smooth movements, and body placement. The Gracie brothers, Carlos and Helio, and Luiz França were three of Maeda's earliest disciples and, ultimately, the creators of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. All of these forebears worked to improve upon and refine the techniques already in use, as well as invent new ones that eventually gave birth to the martial art we now call Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Triangle chokes, like most chokes, knock someone out in about six seconds. This choke is excellent for self-defense. The Guillotine Choke Like the triangle choke, the guillotine choke works best from full guard. After establishing full guard, it may be started by tying up an attacker's neck before sitting down. In quick or unexpected assaults, the defender has little time to resist or flee. The guillotine choke works best when the defender uses several techniques. First, the guillotine works best with full guard. This controls an attacker's body and limits their harm. ● The defender should instantly free her legs and cross her ankles behind the attacker if she is on her back. You make your opponent bear your weight by leaning your hips up and exerting your weight and force on their hips. With the attacker on top of you in a tight full guard, they cannot posture up or stand up, and their power is much reduced. ● The defender must liberate her hands and arms before choking.
